Menopause Specialist Q & A

What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life characterized by the absence of a monthly period for consecutive 12 months and the absence of ovulation.

It is a process that begins gradually; the ovaries cease production of the sex hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The average age of menopause in America is 52.

Though menopause has a definitive start date, the process is gradual. Production of sex hormones starts to diminish several months or years before you reach menopause.

During this time, known as perimenopause, you may experience an irregular period and many of the signs and symptoms associated with menopause.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Menopause symptoms vary in type, severity, and onset. Some women have mild symptoms that they barely notice, while other women have moderate to severe symptoms that affect their daily life and routine.

Signs and symptoms of menopause include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Lack of energy
  • Mental haziness
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Decreased libido
  • Decreased ability to achieve orgasm
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Breast tenderness

In addition to the physical symptoms, the hormonal changes that occur during perimenopause and menopause also affect bone health, increasing your risk of bone loss that may lead to osteoporosis.

When should I seek help for menopause?

You should seek help for menopause if you have menopause symptoms that affect your quality of life. Dr. Zilberstein is an experienced board-certified OB/GYN and can provide the support, treatment, and medical care you need so you can maintain your active lifestyle.

Though it’s important to seek help for menopause to manage symptoms, Dr. Zilberstein recommends you come in at least once a year for your annual well-woman exam so she can monitor your health and well-being and provide screenings that might prevent health problems related to menopause.
